Jim Wootton, the loss of a 50 year member Gurmit Kaur , Nottinghamshire Branch. Jim became a police officer for the Nottinghamshire County Police back in 1955 at the age of 28, which made him the oldest of his intake. He trained at Pannell Ash and became an IPA member in 1963.

As I spoke to his dear wife Iris and daughter Gwen, they remembered Jim taking the treasurer’s post both for the IPA Branch and Region, often being involved in organising branch activities such as taking three coach loads of people to America in 1981. They were hosted by different police officers and were amazed at the size of the American Police officers’ houses and massive basements full of beer. Jim often wrote stories for the IPA magazine. In the late seventies, he received an honorary award from the IPA region for long service as an IPA member.

During his police career, he worked on traffic, as a beat officer, in the control room and as a school liaison officer where he spent many years teaching children about road safety. As an educational tool, they used puppets, one called Bertie Beacon. They also carried out the cycle proficiency test. Jim spent a number of years organising the police gala day at Epperstone Training School, where he was presented a gift for his commitment to organising successful gala events. Jim retired in 1981 having completed 28 years service and continued to be a IPA member. Vice chair Gurmit Kaur went to see Jim at home to award him his 50 years, but Jim had been taken into hospital, where sadly, he later passed away.

Gift being presented to Bryan Davies by Chair Roy Clarke after he stood down as Secretary for Staffordshire Branch for the last 15 years

In Bruges For most of his career, Notts member Graham Buxton was a member of the Police Motorcycle Unit. On a recent trip to Bruges, he met some of his Belgian counterparts.

Visit from IPA Hungary Three members of IPA Hungary including the President and Secretary submitted a Travel Form to Section UK. On Monday 4th March they met up with our London Reception Officer, Dipesh Dattani, who had arranged for them to have a photo session outside No 10 Downing Street.

Dipesh also arranged a visit around New Scotland Yard. They specifically wanted to visit the Keith Palmer Memorial, situated outside Parliament, where they laid a wreath. A nice touch. Dipesh Dattani, London Reception Officer.

IPA Hungary lay a wreath at Keith Palmer’s memorial.
