Grahame and Sheila Holloway
Article
In my retirement I continued with a few jaunts in our caravan, which led to me becoming a feature writer for the Caravan Club magazine, a role which took me all over the country and lasted for 13 years until I gave up caravanning. I also wrote occasional articles for the local press, one becoming a series which lasted around 2 years. Between 1995 and 2011 I also had six local nature books published, so, as you can see, I’ve enjoyed my retirement. Sadly my active days with the IPA have now ceased, apart from reading the minutes of Branch meetings and my enjoyment of Police World. I still have my lovely wife of 62 years. Sheila was a young staff nurse at the RD&E Hospital, in Exeter, when we met at the Matron’s Xmas ball in 1957 and married the following September. I am still a member of the Devon Branch, as I did not want to move after all these years.
An interesting twist was that post-retirement, Chuck went into the film industry, having several of his scripts made into movies with well-known actors. The bonus was, that after my retirement, my wife and I met up with Chuck in Hollywood, for a personal tour of Universal Studios as well as some other filming locations. But time moves on and in June 1986, after 33 years of service, I decided it was time to retire. I was still active with the Devon Branch and at the time of my retirement was its Chairman. However, the constitution in those days stated that only serving officers could hold office, so I graciously stepped down. I remained active for a number of years, but realising age was creeping up on me, I left our beloved Devon in 2012, to move closer to family.
One of Grahame’s many magazine articles.
More Devon Memories By coincidence, a second long standing Devon Branch member was inspired by our 70th Anniversary issue. More than just a membership card David German , Devon & Cornwall Branch
Thank you for the 70th Anniversary edition of Police World. The photograph of our Founding Member on page nine reminded me of my old membership Card. After much searching I found it bringing back many memories. It is the same sort of card to Arthur’s, but obviously with different dates. I joined The Plymouth City Police in May 1964 . During 1969 I attended a talk given by the local IPA representative, and joined immediately. Over the years I have enjoyed many overseas holidays, assisted by members of staff at Fox Road. Our most recent trip was in 2003, when we went to Canada. We were very well looked after by the Area Representative Larry Sheppard and his wife Judy. I have been retired for 30 years and have always sung the praises of the IPA.
