Golfing at Blairgowrie Yvonne McGregor ; Section UK VP Our 2018 National Golf Competition was held at the prestigious Blairgowrie Golf Club in Scotland and played over two of the finest Championship Golf Courses, Landsdowne and Rosemount. Rosemount’s claim to fame is that Greg Norman, the famous Australian golfer, enjoyed his first European tour victory on the course. I n addition to the National event , the annual Stanley Hannah Competition between Scotland and Northern Ireland was held on Wednesday. This friendly competition has been running since 1983. 33 players had entered the Stanley Hannah Richard Simpson and Bob Barr. Thursday morning’s play began at 10 o’clock, with a change in the weather. The 25 players were met with Scotch Mist and a 10 degrees drop in temperature. The mist did eventually clear and each Course and Nearest the Pin. These were won by Doug Ogilvie and Andy Picken for the Longest Drive and Kaj Lehtovaara and Davie Moffat for Nearest the Pin. John Templeton, from

Northern Ireland, had a Magic 2 and Tommy Gilmore, also from Northern Ireland, received a small bottle of Prosecco to “drown his sorrows”. This year the number of Teams was well down on last year, the main reason given was the distance to travel. Without exception, all the players said this was among the best course the competition had ever been held on and that the facilities were superb. The consensus was that those who decided not to travel missed a great event on two stunning golf courses. Next year the competition will be returning to England, Region 5 area, and hopefully many more players will be willing to travel. No 1 Region will definitely be there.

the temperature rose slightly throughout the morning. The players walked out into the mist on Rosemount and then four hours later the first group appeared over the horizon. Once again, one of our Swedish visitors, Britt, managed to score an impressive 39 points. After soup and sandwiches it was my honour to present the prizes. There is the Regional Team Event, which is scored on four players from each Region and also an Individual Event. Where there are more than four players from a Region, the Team must be named before they play. No 10 Region only had 2 players and asked Britt and Kaj to play as part of their team. The winning Team with 264 points was from Region 10, comprising of Neil Offord and Martin D’eath with Britt and Kaj. In second place was Team Scotland represented by Doug Ogilvie, Andy Mather, John Glass and Davie Moffat, with 251 points. Third with 241 points, was Northern Ireland whose Team was Tommy Gilmore, Neil Fraser, Steve Brown and Gary Harper. Coming in fourth was No 5 Region who were represented by Steve Winnard, Karl Smethem, Andy Picken and Neil Abdy, with 235 points. The Individual competition was a clean sweep for No 2 Region, with Gary Vance in first place with 78 points. Second was Gary Canavan with 71 points and third was Neil Fraser with 68 points. Other prizes awarded were for Longest Drive on

Competition. In addition to the Scottish and Irish members, we were joined by Britt Hermansson and Kaj Lehtovaara from Section Sweden, who have been supporting this and many other UK events for the last three years. The first tee time on Wednesday was 1400 hours on Landsdowne and the temperature had reached 26 degrees, with a very gentle breeze, making for perfect golfing conditions. Kaj managed to score an amazing 40 Stableford points. The winners of this year’s Stanley Hannah Competition were Northern Ireland, with 203 points to Scotland’s 188. The Scottish Cup was won by Gary Vance from Northern Ireland with a net 69 points. Second was John Glass from Scotland and third was Davie Moffat from Scotland. The winner of the Ulster Cup, awarded for Stableford Points, was Gary Canavan from Northern Ireland with 35 points. Second was Gary Harper from Northern Ireland with 33 points and third was Andy Mather from Scotland with 32, making for an almost clean sweep by the Northern Ireland team. Our Northern Ireland visitors always award Irish crystal glasses to the top six members of the winning team. This year’s recipients were Gary Vance, Gary Canavan, Gary Harper, Steve Brown,
