Fairfax County, Washington Bill Butcher , Thames Valley Branch

Northamptonshire Bowls Brian Dale , Chairman Region 5 On a sunny day in July, Northamptonshire Branch played their annual bowls competition as guests of Roade Bowls Club. Thirty members and partners attended, with 16 playing bowls. Branch Secretary Bill Tapp captained us in a very close game, which Roade won by seven shots. After the game we all enjoyed a Pig Roast and a few drinks. We are all looking forward to next year: perhaps we can win this time.

In March, I submitted a travel form, to Section UK HQ. My wife Val and I were travelling to the USA in June 2019, to New York and to Washington and hoped to make contact with IPA members. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to meet anyone from New York, although we did manage to have a chat with some of New York’s finest when we needed pointing in the right direction. Washington however was a different kettle of fish. Mrs Butcher and I took the metro to Vienna in Fairfax County, where we were met and taken to the Police HQ, given lunch and shown the Museum. We were introduced to Kelly Kunkel and George Ashley who showed us around. Outside is a memorial to the fallen, so I placed a poppy cross.

members with their Long Service Certificates. These awards ranged from 20 years’ membership to 50 years’ membership certificates. We were extremely proud to have two of our long serving members with us, both of whom are over 90 years of age. They were Mr Reg Baldwin and Mr Donald Turner. The day was one of old friends catching up and rekindling friendships, especially for several that had

not been able to attend for some time. One of the best things of the meeting, was listening to the sound of everybody chatting, and the many stories that were shared. Our day was made all the better by the location and the excellent care and attention by the staff at Ingrebourne Links. For those not in the know, the Metropolitan Police is such a big area, that many years ago, they split into 10 Branches, each designated by letters used as Police Station identifiers. K Branch covers the East of London and includes stations: KB = Barking, KG = Dagenham and so on.

Our Metropolitan Police K Branch lunch, in August, included several presentations of Long Service Certificates. We met at the Ingrebourne Links Golf and Country Club, in Rainham, Essex, for one of our usual Branch meetings and Sunday lunches. This was a special day for us, because the 10 Region Chairman Ernie Paris and 10 Region Secretary Steve Hunt, had joined us to present ‘K’ Branch
