A Cornish Walk Wilf Rickard , Cornwall Branch Secretary

70th Anniversary Canal Cruise

Our IPA Iconic Event for 2020 was planned to coincide with the Mayflower 400 event in Plymouth. Sadly, like many events, we suffered two postponements through the Covid crisis. Not to be deterred, we used the July 2021 weekend to hold a summer walk in our beautiful county. Our breath taking 4 ½ mile walk took us around the Mount Edgcumbe Estate, in south-east Cornwall. We toured the waterside perimeter of the Mount Edgcumbe estate, enjoying tremendous views across Plymouth Sound, and onto Dartmoor. We saw a host of 18th century follies, fountains, and shelters along the path. Our route travelled through the park and woodland, laid out by the Earls of Edgcumbe, who built the house in the mid 16th century. We should have been a party of 14, but the dreaded self-isolation warning came to a few, and then another member suffered an injury to his foot. So, seven humans and two dogs, gathered at the Maker Church Car Park, and with a short rain shower, set off on our walk. The weather remained dry as we descended through fields and into woods, with some very pleasant scenery along the way. At Millbrook Lake, we were treated to idyllic scenes of boats resting on mud flats, and picturesque cottages alongside the tree-lined waters edge. A path around a cornfield took us to Empacombe, where a picture postcard view of cottages alongside the river appeared before us. A phone call and the weather radar app, warned of heavy rain, so we shortened our walk, and headed straight for shelter in the Edgcumbe Arms Inn. Four more members joined us for lunch, so 11 sat down for a very convivial lunch, enjoyable food and more importantly, in the spirit of the IPA, some excellent Friendship.

David Winnard , Vice Chairman, Blackpool & North Lancashire Branch Like so many things we were all looking forward to, our canal cruise, to celebrate the IPA’s 70th anniversary suffered several postponements. We finally made it onto the Lancaster Canal in August 2021. A group of 22 members and friends set off from the Famous Barton Grange Garden Centre at Bilsborrow, in Lancashire. During our cruise, we enjoyed some fish & chips from premises adjacent to the canal. We all thoroughly enjoyed our somewhat belated, two hour cruise to celebrate the IPA Anniversary.
