No Fog on the Tyne Martin Abbott , North East Branch In July this year, North East Branch welcomed IPA friends Matthias Hauck and Janine Tauchert from Hanau, Germany, into Newcastle upon Tyne for an overnight port stop as they cruised their way north to Scotland and Norway. Welcoming them to this historic great northern city, was local IPA member Martin Abbott, and his wife Pam. After which, Matthias and Janine enjoyed a guided tour, via a leisurely walk through the Roman and Norman history of the city. This included: its connection to the naval battle at Trafalgar, and its contribution to the Industrial Revolution. They were fascinated by the architecture, culture and historic footprint of Newcastle. Both Matthias and Janine work in CID, with Matthias actively collecting badges and memorabilia. He was presented with a Section UK pennant, along with various ‘stuff from the private vault’. It totally made his day. Later on, meeting on-duty colleagues on the quayside, provided a photo opportunity and conversation quickly lead to Police life and routine. Thanks to both colleagues who took time out from a busy schedule to chat with Matthias and Janine. The day closed, with ‘bacon stotties’ at a plush establishment on Grey Street, where our goodbyes were made and the pair returned to their ship. “Ahoy” - next stop Scotland. Matthias submitted a contact request via IPA UK, following which the tour was arranged locally.
