Outside we were treated to a fine display of motorcycles and cars, all equipped with up-to-date comms and detection equipment. PC Barry Joynson and Sgt Phil Smith were on hand to answer all our questions. PC Kieran Norcup gave an impressive demonstration of his skills as a drone pilot and explained the invaluable resource the drone had become. We met Sgt Roger Wetton, a highly experienced collision investigator, who is in charge of the forensic team, including specialist vehicle examiners. The equipment in his vehicle was nothing short of magic! Highways Traffic Cars were also on display and Highways Traffic Officer, Ryan Biggs gave us a real insight into the work carried out by his team and the close relationship with the Police. During our time at the unit, Phil Smith was running a live enforcement. We were able to witness vehicles being pulled off the motorway into the huge inspection area, where offences were dealt with and some vehicles were prohibited and detained immediately. Vehicles detained were immobilised with cables to prevent absconding. Removal of cables carries a fee which is used for road policing purposes. The Highways Authority had given us the run of their facility on the top floor where we had organised a buffet lunch. We were pleased that Nicki remained with us all morning, so we were delighted to entertain her to lunch along with Sion and Scott. We left after saying our goodbyes and heartfelt thanks to all. I have to say, for some of us whose police careers move ever further into the past, the visit was a real eye opener that knocked down walls of cynicism and broke myths. I can confirm that within Staffordshire Police, supported by an enthusiastic leadership team, “Road Policing” is not a buzzword, but a very serious approach to address all aspects of harm and criminal activity. This was a visit in the true sense of “Service through Friendship.” Scott, who recently became a member of the IPA, joined our SIG and he, along with Nicki, will be spreading the word and benefits of the IPA in Staffordshire. Sion retires soon and we wish him all the best for the future.
