IPA Race Day at Mallory Park IPA Race Day has been one of the highlights on the IPA calendar for many a year. Leicestershire Branch work on behalf of No 5 Region to ensure the event is available for members across the UK to enjoy. T his year the owners of Mallory Park set out new financial restrictions on the allocation of discounted tickets which had of members on their arrival. We again had exclusive use of the ‘Hailwood’ suite and members were able to wander around the pits watching the activity surrounding the cars or
to be met before the IPA could hold their event in the same fashion as before. It meant that our Region had to approach National with a view to support the organising Branch. Our thanks, therefore, also go to President Mick Luke for stepping in with the financial resources to ensure that this popular annual event could continue. Having ironed out these teething issues, we again were treated to a superb day’s racing, which provided numerous crashes and determined, dogged racing to whet most people’s appetites. Despite not being able to advertise the event until much later in the year, enthusiastic members attended in large numbers to celebrate the competition for the Peter Goodwin Memorial Trophy. Four of our local Voluntary Police Cadets were also in attendance to assist in the guiding
drivers competed with each other in three gruelling races. The trophy was won by Rick Styrin, a worthy winner, who won by only a small margin after a thrilling and exciting performance. The Trophy was presented by No 5 Region Chair, Clive Wood, and Rick was genuinely touched about receiving the Trophy when he was informed about the history behind it. Sincere thanks are due to IPA Leicestershire members, the voluntary Police Cadets, the management and staff of Mallory Park (Motorsport) Ltd and of course, all those IPA colleagues who turned out in force to make Sunday 27th September 2016 a day to remember.

The IPA has had an interest in motor sport since the sixties, when John Gott, the Chief Constable of Northamptonshire was racing his Austin Healey 3000, and has provided trophies at such prestigious circuits as Silverstone, Donington Park and now here at Mallory Park. The Peter Goodwin Trophy was instituted by the IPA Nottinghamshire Branch in memory of a local Officer, Peter Goodwin, who died in service. Peter was very interested in motor sport, so it is a fitting tribute to him. The team sponsored by the IPA was the Toyo Tires Porsche Championship ( www.porscheracingdrivers.co.uk ) and the
