The Spirit of Friendship

Being Social Northumbria branch have reported that their social calendar this summer was not only very enjoyable but also raised funds for the charities they support. The Northumbria Charity Golf day at Rothbury, in June, raised the sum of £1082. Donations of £541 were made to Macmillan Nurses and Cancer Research UK. In July, the the branch enjoyed an afternoon at St George’s Hospital Bowling Club with an event organised by Anne-Marie Wilkinson. The branch made a £20 donation to St George’s Bowling Club for the use of the facilities. Northumbria's other sponsored charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind, has reported that Scooby - the current sponsored dog, is now in his final stages of training and will soon be placed with his new owner. Keith Laidler, branch Secretary, said “Scooby has impressed everyone with his temperament and has developed into an impressive looking dog.” The next Northumbria IPA event is their ‘Christmas Weekend Away’ - for more events such as this visit: www.ipa-uk.org/Event-Catalog

As Euan and Sheena continued on their deliveries they were aided immensely by Jeff Hurd who volunteered to organise the onward journey of all 5 Region’s order. Hearing of our epic journey Roger and Helen Falklingham, from 3 Region, offered a bed for the night - IPA friendship at its very best. Steve and Lynn Palmer from 8 Region also offered accommodation. Steve Hunt coordinated the orders for 10 Region as they headed into London to visit their daughter - doing a couple of deliveries en route. Euan said, “Three 11 Region members kindly called at our daughter’s home to uplift their orders and others were delivered by train, tube and car during our few days there. Our daughter even got in on the act delivering one for us on a day out.” He then summed up by saying, “1700 miles from the start we arrived safely home in Aberdeen rather weary as you might imagine but having met many new friends along the way and with the phrase so often said ‘if you are down this way again, please let us know’ it was well worth the effort.”

The Arthur Troop Centenary Whisky has been safely delivered thanks to the efforts of Euan and Sheena Forbes. Euan Forbes, from 1 Region, who organised the production and delivery of the 10 year old and 25 year Speyside single malt whisky reports, “120 bottles of the 25 year old were produced making it a very special, rare, limited edition. You are very lucky if you have one as it will only increase in value.” The most valuable, No 1 for 1 Region, Scotland is going to be raffled - look out for details on Web News in the near future. Euan went on to explain, “The biggest hurdle in this project was distribution but with help and generosity from many IPA Regions, and my wife Sheena and I acting as ‘White Van’ people, delivery was completed.” Euan was touched by the Spirit of Friendship as he began the process of working out how he was going to organise deliveries across the UK. Help came from Vice President Mark Kernohan who arranged for collection from Scotland and delivery to customers in Northern Ireland - coordinated by Pete Connolly and Fred Boyd. To hear the stories of families who have lost loved ones, with the knock on the door in the middle of the night, to tell them their family member has died on duty, makes you realise how lucky we are every single day to be able to go home to the people we love... Some people don't get that chance.”

Birmingham West Midlands branch Chair, Andy Gregory, attended the Care Of Police Survivors (COPS) Annual Memorial Service Survivors’ Day on behalf of President Mick Luke. Chief Constables from across the UK and the heads of all the other associations attended (including the Superintendents Association, the Police Federation and British Association for Women in Policing (BAWP).
