The Ian Thompson Memorial Prize Writing Competition: winners announced Last year, the Section UK Writers’ SIG launched The Ian Thompson Memorial Prize Writing Competition .
Ian was a retired North Yorkshire Police Officer, who after retirement became the CEO of BAPCO (British Association of Public Safety Communications Officials). During his two careers, Ian did much to promote excellence in communication between the emergency services. S adly, in 2020, Ian died of heart disease aged 56, and his family suggested a writing competition in his memory.
The Winners Ian’s widow Amanda joined Writers’ SIG Chair David Lewis in judging the many fabulous entries. Together, they compiled a short-list of six entries, from which two entries were chosen that best matched Ian’s vision for the future of the way we communicate with each other.
The prize of £150 and a winner’s certificate will be sent to David, and we look forward to reading more from his pen in the future. The runner up, who receives a certificate, was Tim Mobbs, for one of his two submitted pieces called: I Am Big Brother. A poem in rap form Where Have Our Voices Gone? by Fiona Willey, a serving officer of North Yorkshire Police, was also commended for style of composition. Cultural Updates from VP Sean Hannigan Digital Archive update The promised digital archive is finalised after a few technical issues were overcome. It goes live this month. Police World supplements Please watch out for latest news about the next three supplements: PW Re-Start , which is aimed at retiring and retired members; PW Thin Blue Line , which will concentrate on strengthening our Mental Health PW Specials/PCSO/Staff .
To reflect Ian’s career long interest in communications; competition entries were on: communication in any form, any aspect of technology, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), and were ‘forward facing,’ embracing the future rather than the past. The first prize of £150 was kindly donated by Ian’s family.
Congratulations to the overall winner David Tetlow, from Bolton for his piece: Future Reflections .
Creating Images D Osborne Hughes (Doz) , Leicestershire Branch & Writers SIG T o create this photograph, I placed my camera on a tripod and took a long exposure image of the waterfall. Then I took an image with my subject standing in the scene (In this case the beautiful Priya Chauhan). Then I combined the two images using a photo editing program (in this case, Photoshop). My sunflower painting began on a walk with one of my sisters who lives in Germany. We walked past a sunflower field long after it had been harvested (Late October) and this sunflower seemed to have escaped and was looking all forlorn and lonely and beautiful. It is oil on canvas 30” x 20”
