Young Members’ Forum looks to the future Steve Bretherton , Section UK Secretary General
As is often the way with such events, the discussion and ideas continued to flow (along with the beer) during Saturday evening, over a meal in Nottingham. Forum members came up with more then 80 suggestions, comments and observations about recruitment and communications. As a bonus, two Gimborn seminars emerged almost fully-formed by the end of the weekend. Organiser Steve Bretherton said, “It’s clear that among our younger members we have a huge pool of experience and talent just waiting to be tapped. I was bowled over by the enthusiasm and commitment of the YMF members. They had a real ‘can do’ approach to all the issues we discussed, and I’d like to thank them for their efforts and particularly for giving up their weekend”. The ideas generated by the Forum members will be considered by the NEC and will assist them to better understand members’ needs and to help them shape policy in the years ahead. The Young Members’ Forum is still looking for representatives from several regions. If you’d like to be part of the Forum please contact Martin Turner VP at turnermartin26@hotmail.com .
April saw our Young Members’ Forum (YMF) gather at Fox Road to discuss the future of the IPA. The YMF was established in early 2018 by Clive Wood, and is chaired by Martin Turner. The Forum’s purpose is to bring together younger members who are passionate about helping members to get the most out of their membership and in turn, increasing our membership. Those attending represented a cross section of younger members from a range of operational and corporate roles. The fact that all but one of the participants were still serving made the gathering somewhat unique in recent times. Over the two days, the participants considered a range of issues from a younger perspective. Recruitment and communications were the two key themes of the meeting. Specific topics under discussion included: promoting the IPA and making it relevant to serving officers and staff, Professional Development, Gimborn, UK Seminars, the look and content of Police World, the national web site, Facebook, Twitter and other social media, IPA Houses, supplies and member benefits. Members were asked to be frank and honest about their experiences and perceptions of the IPA. They were asked to suggest what changes could be made to the IPA to increase its appeal to younger officers and staff, how it could make best use of social media and how it could be more responsive to members’ needs.
