Nearly 45 years ago my son bought me, for Father’s Day, a Jaguar Classic Car. Needless to say I was elated at such a gift, but before you think my son must be loaded, it was a 1/18 scale, die cast model of the car and not a full size Jaguar. All these years later I have over 2000 models of cars, aircraft and military vehicles. Yes, I am a big boy with a lot of toys. One of my favourite collections are my police vehicles from around the world, but my ultimate favourite is my 1950s Dan Dare Radio set, which I got hold of two years ago, after 65 years of wanting one. The story goes, that one Christmas, all I really wanted was a Dan Dare Radio Set, which I had seen in one of my Mother’s catalogue books. So, when Christmas morning arrived, imagine my disappointment when on opening my presents there was no radio set. I was bereft of comfort and sobbed all morning, until my favourite Uncle arrived and realised that I was in a right state. So, he disappeared, returning an hour or so later with a substitute for my missing Christmas present. Two empty and cleaned tin cans looped together with a long piece of string, and to make it more authentic he had painted the word Dan on one can and Dare on the other. It worked, as I now had the only Dan Dare walkie talkie set in the World, well that’s what I was told. Now in 2020, I still collect, and have turned the upstairs of my flat into a sort of mini museum, where I can disappear to and lose myself in my little World of collectables. I would never have thought that all these years later the gift of a model car would have led to what I have now. As for the usual question “who does the dusting?” well armed with a few magic brushes and cloths, the answer is simple “Me.”
