Ken & Betty
Happiness is Made of Platinum Chris Charlton , Secretary, Scarborough Branch
Long standing Scarborough Branch member Ken Dale and his wife Betty appeared recently in the York Press, where they hailed Ken as a “North Yorkshire Police hero.” Ken and Betty were both hospitalised with Covid-19 in the latter part of 2020. Happily, they did recover in time to celebrate their Platinum Wedding Anniversary (70 years) at the Alba Rose Care Home in Pickering, where they now live. The celebration was attended by the couple’s family and friends, as well as the Police Commander for Scarborough, Superintendent Andrea Kell. Ken and Betty met at a dance in Hutton Le Hole, and were married 70 years ago on June 16th 1951. They say that a good helping of “give and take” is the secret to a long and happy marriage. Alba Rose manager, Tamyn Milton-Wright, said: “Ken and Betty are a lovely couple and it was an absolute privilege to be able to join them for this special celebration.” The chief constable of North Yorkshire, Lisa Winward, sent a letter to Ken and Betty, which was read out by Superintendent Kell, thanking them for their “dedication and strength.” Ken, who is now 92 years old, joined the police in 1948, starting his beat in Filey, for what was to become a distinguished 37-year career. Ken was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Bravery, after disarming a man who was holding his wife hostage in a car packed with petrol cans and a hand grenade. His award was presented by the High Sherriff of North Yorkshire. Ken retired from the police in 1985 and involved himself in local politics, serving on North Yorkshire County Council for many years. Betty was very active in the WI, Local Conservative party, RNLI and St John’s Ambulance, where she too was honoured with a lifetime achievement award. The couple have two children, Stuart and Elizabeth, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.” Sadly, Ken’s IPA Branch was not aware of the celebration beforehand, but Chris sent a belated greetings card to Ken and Betty wishing them well.
