PD Swoop welcomes our rowers to Hawaii >

A Waikiki Welcome In the last issue of Police World, we read about two Hertfordshire police officers and IPA members; Darren Clawson and Arron Worbey, who were part of a crew of four, taking on a world record challenge to row 2700 miles unsupported, from Monterey Bay in California to Honolulu in Hawaii. They hoped to break the world record of 39 days 12 hours and 20 minutes to complete the crossing and if successful, they would also be the oldest crew to do it, as they are all in their 40s. The rowers did complete their epic challenge, arriving in Hawaii just after 10pm on 13th July, where despite the unsociable hour, the Waikiki Yacht Club gave the team a fabulous Hawaiian welcome.

Their 43 days at sea did not break the overall record, but they should be proud at achieving their goal of being the oldest crew to complete this daunting adventure. Their superhuman effort has raised money for three charities close to their hearts, including the Saint Elizabeth’s Centre, which cares for more than 200 vulnerable children and adults with severe learning disabilities and complex medical needs. The rowers also donated to the Marine Conservation Society, and raised awareness around the issue of ocean plastics during their crossing.
