A Derbyshire Experience

the canal, railway and River Derwent run parallel along the valley bottom. This area is now a World Heritage Site, and has masses of industrial history. From High Peak Junction there is an incline along which railway trucks were winched to the top of the hill to then be taken by steam train to Whaley Bridge, where they were lowered down another incline to join the High Peak canal. The whole trip took two hours, and passed through very tranquil areas, with wildlife in abundance. The volunteers provided refreshments whilst aboard, and a presentation giving historical details was given at various points. Over 20 members and friends of Derbyshire branch recently took to the waters of the Cromford canal, near Matlock Bath. The canal has only recently become navigable again - along part of its length. The narrow boat, which is electrically powered, is run by volunteers and carries passengers from the wharf at Cromford, near the site of Richard Arkwright’s original cotton mill, to High Peak Junction. In Memory Reginald John King , Life Member of 7 Region and former volunteer Editor of Police World, sadly passed away at the age of 93 years. Notified by David Stamp. Ernest (Ernie) Fisher , Honorary Life Member of 7 Region, passed away aged 83 years. Ernie held the post of 7 Region Secretary for many years and was well respected Nationally. Notified by David Stamp. Raymond Howard , from South Yorkshire branch, passed away in June. He was a member for 55 years and had IPA pen-pals all over the UK and around the world. Notified by his son Robert Howard. Thomas Henry Sharp , from 6 Region, sadly passed away 3 August. Tom joined the IPA in 1984 and subsequently became Chief Yeoman Warder and Head of the Queen’s Bodyguard. Notified by Robin Pithey. ILDEP Certificate Members of the IPA who participate on its International Learning & Development Exchange Programme (ILDEP) will receive a certificate of participation once their programme is complete. Sean Hannigan, Vice President overseeing Professional Development said, “It is only proper that participants have a document which gives official recognition of their hours spent in continual professional development.”
