Ron Longhurst: the passing of a true IPA Gentleman Kevan Barrett , Chairman New Scotland Yard Branch Ron Longhurst passed away on 9th December 2021, aged 97. Not many alive today will remember him, but I do. Ron joined the IPA in the mid 50’s. He was posted to Hackney Police Station (Metropolitan Police) as an Inspector, where I was fortunate to come under his wing. That was how I came to join the IPA in 1959. Ron was very active, on many IPA Committees, even leading one of the first organised trips, when we visited Wuppertal, in Germany’s North Rhine Westphalia. It is because of him that I, and many others owe our involvement with the Association.
Without Ron, and others like him, the IPA would never have succeeded. Whether you knew him or not, just give thanks that without the likes of Ron Longhurst, you may not have had an Association today. I am proud to have been his personal friend, and owe to him my IPA life.

The new facilities are a huge improvement on those I experienced in the latter years of my career. They are also an environmental improvement, with most of its power coming from solar panels. All in all, we had an interesting afternoon, especially for me having played a small part in making it happen.
before retiring in 2019, was a joint HQ for Nottinghamshire’s Police and Fire & Rescue Services. The project had already been on the drawing board for two years before my involvement, and the builders were yet to break ground when I retired. But, two and a half years and over £9 million later, The Chief Constable welcomed IPA members to his new HQ. The new building sits alongside the existing buildings, which will now be refurbished to a similar standard. Chief Constable Craig Guildford and his wife personally escorted us around the very well equipped building. We began with tea and cake in their new canteen (which makes a welcome return after a ten year absence). The canteen is run by a charity called
