Germany and America to Glasgow Allan Montgomery , Glasgow Lomond and Clyde Branch In November, we had visitors from Germany and America. The German visitors were Officer Nils Horning and his partner Helena, the American was
Brian Sweeny. While Nils had booked an Airbnb in Glasgow, I invited Brian to stay with Sandra & I. Both parties asked for some historic information on Glasgow, and I took them on a guided tour of the city.
I also took them up to The Police Scotland College at Tulliallan, where they had a guided tour of the college and spoke to some of the students. In the afternoon, Brian met with another IPA member for afternoon tea in the Willow Tea Rooms. Later that evening, Brian was given a ride along with the Q Division CP unit, and our grateful thanks go to Superintendent Ann Gallagher, the Sub Divisional Commander, for permitting this. After Brian returned to the states, Nils & Helena asked to see some of our beautiful countryside. We took them on a tour which included Stirling, Aberfoyle, the Trossacs, and Loch Lomond, ending up in Helensburgh.
Reflections on 35 years as a Special Constable, and 56 years in the IPA George Rilon , Gloucestershire Branch
Royal Hong King Auxiliary Police
In 1966, the IPA was in its infancy in Gloucestershire. While on duty in Nailsworth Police Station, a main road Patrol car Constable arrived for the obligatory cup of tea. During our conversation, he mentioned he was a member of the IPA, and persuaded me to join, as I love to travel. In my job as Sales Manager of a Pneumatics Company, I had to travel the UK and parts of Europe, plus holidays with my late Wife. met a couple of constables, who invited me to their rest room to talk about our Special Constabulary. They couldn’t understand that it was voluntary, no pay and no gun.
In 1982, I had to go to Hong Kong on business. I contacted the IPA, who arranged a visit and contacts in the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police. While there, I was invited to attend a passing out parade for the new recruits. Later, my wife and I were invited to attend their picnic on Lamma Island, travelling there by a very smart Motor Junk, then to their evening dinner at the floating jumbo restaurant with the local CID. Also, I did an evening tour of duty round the night spots of Hong Kong, it was an eye opener (nothing like it at Nailsworth). When my wife died in 2000, a friend of ours invited me to Australia for a break. While there, I visited Melbourne Police Station & Museum, where I
Since 2003, I’ve attended Anzac Day. Through my hobby I own military vehicles. I usually drive a WC54 Dodge Ambulance in the parades. I’ve been attending Anzac Day in Australia every other year until 2019, when Covid put a halt to my travelling. I’ve made contacts with various police officers in all the states except Tasmania and Northern. I shall be 89 later this year and I haven’t ruled them out yet!
